Every year, on the first Sunday of June, something impactful happens around the world.
In cities such as Toronto, Los Angeles, Tokyo, Rome, London, Mumbai, and Mexico City, animal lovers come together for one shared purpose: to give a voice to the voiceless. It’s called National Animal Rights Day (NARD)—a global day of remembrance, unity, and hope for animals.
As an animal advocate and activist, this day holds deep meaning. Advocacy can sometimes feel lonely, especially in a world that often turns away from the suffering of animals. But NARD reminds me that I am not alone. Thousands of others march through city streets, hold signs high, and speak truth to power and all for those who cannot speak for themselves.
NARD stands up for the billions of animals suffering and dying each year, most invisibly, in factory farms. These numbers can seem overwhelming, but I am reminded that every life matters and these are individual animals, innocent beings, whose lives are taken for a fleeting moment of a meal, a human convenience. The thought of their pain, agony, suffering, and silence brings tears to my eyes. It breaks my heart to think of how deeply ingrained our culture of consumption is and where, sadly, convenience is chosen over compassion or consciousness for that animal.
But I also see that the tide is turning for a brighter future where compassion for animals is being considered. I am hopeful for the future of animals. As I see schools beginning to serve plant-based meals, cities signing the Plant-based Treaty, and more ordinary citizens going vegan. I see young people organizing, rising up to challenge the status quo, and I see change makers: other advocates, educators, celebrities, etc., working to build a compassionate world for all beings.
Progress is happening. The movement is growing. And it’s not going anywhere. As I often say: “Animals are here with us, not for us.” This quote is my book, A Voice for Animals, in which I pay tribute to the voiceless animals who deserve to be seen, heard, and respected. It’s also why I show up, speak out, and invite others to do the same.
How You Can Help Keep the Momentum Going:
Educate – Talk about the reality of how animals are treated, and share alternatives. Compassion begins with awareness.
Celebrate Victories – Whether it’s a new law, a plant-based menu in schools, or more people choosing kindness, acknowledge progress.
Get Involved – Attend events like NARD. Show up. Share stories. Create a community. These gatherings remind us that mourning and celebration can exist side by side—and that they fuel the fight for justice.
The NARD website shares a beautiful vision that brings me hope for the future:
“Our vision is to establish a National Animal Rights Day in every country.”
It’s happening. The wave of change is real, and it’s growing. Let’s keep that momentum alive. Please take a moment to sign the Declaration of Animal Rights and help amplify this critical message:
Together, we are the voice. Together, we can create a world that values every life.
